The food itself is alright but the entire experience of hiking to the Inn early in the morning, cooking your belly with warm food at the end, and soaking up the beautiful view... And to do it with friends. It's a little lovely experience. I feel like it should be a yearly tradition.

You do not need to be a member of the West Point Inn to stay here, however, weekend overnights are difficult because members book them months in advance. If you want to stay here, shoot for a weeknight or call at the last minute to see if there's a cancelation.
Here's the thing about staying at the West Point Inn, you can't drive to it. You have to either park at Pan Toll Ranger Station or Boot Jack and hike 1-2 miles in, bringing your food, sheets, and change of clothes. Basically, you need to be able to backpack in. Why would anybody do this? Here's why...
Mount Tamalpais is one of the north bay's most beautiful parks. Incredible hiking, old growth redwoods, views of the SF bay area, ocean, history, it really has something for everybody. The West Point Inn was built in the early 1900's and retains its charm. The views from the deck are incredible. There is no electricity at the inn. all lighting is by gas lamp appliances. In the evening the caretaker might build a nice roaring fire for all the guests to sit around. On the evening I stayed overnight, I was with a group of about 10 who were all associates of Friends of Mt Tam. In addition to us, there were some other California peeps and some Europeans.
Sitting out on the porch after sunset and looking down on San Francisco and the entire bay area was absolutely beautiful. In the morning we got up early and watched the sunrise. Breakfast consisted of muffins, yogurt, and coffee and a leisurely hike back to the car. -
