I love hiking here... Or even just parking in the shade and enjoying a picnic lunch. It's loads of fun to watch the burros munch on the grass. And the views are incredible. Fun for the whole family.

I love this place. So quiet and peaceful. Great hiking. Dogs love it here too. We have seen owls, coyote, rabbits and Donkeys...

Box Springs Mountain Park may be accessed from either Moreno Valley or Riverside. However, it is the Moreno Valley side of the Box Springs MP that offers really good hikes, bird watching, herds of wild burrow, mountain biking and more! At the Hidden Springs entrance to the park there is an equestrian watering station, picnic tables and a nice, easy 1 mile loop around the lower elevations of the park. The trail to reach the Moreno Valley "M" starts from here, too. But drive further up Pigeon Pass Road and it will literally lead you right into the main entrance of the park. From here you can hike the entire ridge of the Box Springs Mountains, enjoying the beautiful views of the valleys below.

We had time to kill and were looking for a picnic place. BOY, did we luck out! Keep an eye on your time, however, as we could have spent hours here and sit was, we almost missed out flight!Upon arriving (and driving up up up on a somewhat muddy road), we parked and watched a coyote playing and hunting in the field below the rock outcrops. We met some interesting elder women who shared our picnic table and enlightened us with history and stories. Otherwise, we had the park to ourselves. The setting was gorgeous and there were lots of trails calling us--but we had to get to the airport. I was sad not to have ad the opportunity for a hike. It looked excellent!I would HIGHLY recommend this gem of a park; the natural wildness and open space, rocky outcrops and good looking trails. You can stay as long or as short as your heart and time permits. And don't miss the Burro Crossing signs on the way to/fro the freeway.... on the way back we were stopped by two standing in the road who came to nuzzle our car windows. Then we suddenly noticed individuals and hearts in many of the open spaces, fields, yards and road sides right in town!!! (They animals were fun to see, but also sad that they are not really wild animals andI can't imagine there is enough food and habitat to sustain them properly.)

Big West in the Inland Empire. The city of Riverside is located 60 miles east of Los Angeles but even native Angelenos can forget how big and important an area it is.
