Cozy Chinese eatery in Union Square. All the Chinese food basics are here and well represented. Also a couple surprises for more advanced eaters. Friendly service and affordable especially being in Union Square. The perfect spot to warm up on a cold night. Two dumplings up????????
File under: opinion of a Caucasian tourist
Was looking for Chinese dining near my hotel. Found this place via Maps and gave it a shot. Glad I came here.
The interior is small and unassuming, though clean and with plenty of sunlight. Waitress was helpful and attentive.
I ordered the green onion pancake with sliced beef, and also got an order of dumplings. The pancake dish was really interesting with lots of texture variety. Beef was thinly sliced and tender, with a bit of plum sauce to add sweetness to the savory pancake. Dumplings were simple--pork and broth--and served with a side of vinegar. Delicious.
I ordered hot & sour soup to go which was, in my opinion, the least interesting dish of the lot. Definitely not bad but unremarkable. It had a nice vinegar tang with hints of pepper but wasn't as flavorful as I am used to. (Then again, every restaurant has its own interpretation of this soup so it might just be a case of me being unfamiliar with this style. What do I know?)
Other dishes on the menu looked great. I really wanted to try the Chicken with Explosive Chili Pepper or Beef with Sugar Snap Peas in XO Sauce but was already full. Maybe next time!
Traveler's note: The restaurant automatically added a 15% charge for service, so if you add a tip it's probably on top of that. Ask if you're unsure.
Overall, I recommend giving the place a try. I plan to come back the next time I'm in town.
King Lee was a good find, they do not have a very big seating area but the turn over seems to be pretty fast. They offer a great selection of szechuan dishes! We went there will a vegetarian and he had no difficulty finding things to eat. We did family style dinning as imho is the best way to eat at any Chinese restaurant! Hit this spot if you are in town, you will love it.
I like the food here. It is tasty and not overboard with the spices. Some people would probably prefer more spiciness whereas some would probably prefer less - hence I believe this place strikes a nice balance. My 口水鸡was tasty. Very tasty with ample spices and herbs. I then ordered a house special fried rice because I wanted some rice but was too big in portion for me to finish. I wish I had company while dining here so I can order more variety.
