  I discovered Shobu through a friend and watched a good deal of their training for a few moths before deciding to join. They welcomed me in with no prior experience in any martial art and were incredibly patient with my ability. It has been a year and a half nearly and it is truly a hidden gem in Massachusetts.
  The breadth and depth of Gleason sensei's knowledge is incredible, and this is reflected in his students.
  If you've never trained in Aikido this is a fantastic first step, if you've trained for years: this is an incredible resource to understand a bit more of proper aikido from some immensely qualified practitioners.

  On April 2014 I had to spend 2 months in Boston area for work. I looked for an Aikido dojo and the Shobu web site convinced me to give it a try. Quickly I realized how lucky I am.
  The dojo is so beautiful, the students are very friendly and helpful but most importantly Gleason Sensei is a fantastic nanadan Shihan. Even though the classes contain mixed level students, he always find the right advice and guidance for everyone. He also links the techniques to the philosophical foundations of Aikido and thus helps his students walk on the spiritual path of this martial art rather than learn some self defense arm locks.
  I really miss the atmosphere and I hope to visit the dojo again in my next trip to Boston.

  Shobu aikido is a great place to learn a profound art and practice of aikido. Gleason Sensei is a great teacher, very skillful in the practice of aikido as well as teaching it. I have two decades of various martial arts experience with several different teachers and I can say that Shobu school is best, most impressive martial arts school I have ever seen.

  Shobu Aikido in Somerville is a fantastic place to study aikido. The training is in traditional aikido with a focus on development of a soft internal power that can flexibly absorb and redirect incoming attacks. As at many aikido dojos, at Shobu the training is great wholesome intellectually stimulating exercise and there is a wonderful community of fun folks of diverse ages and experience levels to train with and get to know. They are very welcoming and the dojo is spacious. But what distinguishes Shobu in my mind is the constant balanced attention to BOTH martial effectiveness AND the ideal that “aikido is the principle of nonresistance.” Because marrying those two apparently irreconcilable principles is so difficult, many martial artists find themselves choosing one or the other, emphasizing either destructive techniques and brute strength, OR flowing and blending with little regard for their own safety. At Shobu Gleason Sensei is really dedicated to teaching how NOT attempting to manipulate your partner can actually be effective self-defense. He is a world-class aikido master (7th dan Shihan) but teaches four classes per week so each regular student gets individualized feedback from him directly. His senior students also offer constant guidance that is consistent with Gleason’s rigorous understanding of the art. I feel lucky to be able to train at Shobu.
