I am a female student studying over 20 years with Josan Lu Karate and I am grateful every day that I found this karate school. I personally believe karate should be taught to all woman (and men) especially during these times. Owner Hanshi Sana Bennett, a 9th degree black belt is a wonderful instructor of this traditional style of karate whose foundation is the Kyokushin Kai Karate. Our teachings go beyond punching and kicking, we are taught to be respectful, kind, humble and grateful without even realizing it. You will get a total mind, body and spirit workout here. You may never need to use your skills but it is better to know it and not need it, then need it and not know it. Osu!

As a long time student of the dojo, and someone who had 3 children also attend, I can't possibly say enough positive things about the dojo, the fellow students, and of course our instructor Shuseki Shihan Sana. I highly recommend that anyone considering traditional Japanese style karate visit the dojo and meet Shuseki Shihan.

This is my third place. Beyond being a clean, safe space with people, it's a community.

A warm, welcoming community with no judgement. It is a place to de-stress, de-compress, breath, ground and move. Move beyond front/back, side to side. In other words, move in 3D, as our genetic code intended.

It's a community of supportive, encouraging, engaging fun people who wants to be there. It's a place and community where you can get recharged whether you're an introvert (like my husband) or extrovert like me.

The instruction is excellent.  It is a humbling and liberating experience  No pressure,  you grow at your own pace. I never felt intimidated in the same space as the seniors as a noob white belter.

No better place to learn the art form, be well and be surrounded by excellent people.

We originally placed my daughter in one of the local kid McDojos, but I desired something more traditional and one where I could train alongside her. I transferred here and began training here myself.

Ultimately, my daughter lost interest in karate, but I've stuck with it for about 4 years and attend the boxing classes on Thursday nights as well as Karate.

Jo San Lu is a place where anyone can feel welcome.

You won't find more knowledgable instruction anywhere if you're looking for a traditional Japanese karate school. From the physical pratice of karate to the japanese tradition and language as it applies to the art, this is the school you want to attend if you want pure, stright-forward traditional Japanese karate. It is a non-conmpetitive environment with students of all ages and ability. Equally as important, this place will feel like home to you. WARNING: there are no smoke machines, strobe lights or blasting music. You won't be doing back flips or wearing a blue gi with red and white stripes and stars down the sleeves. You WILL learn to be humble. You will learn strength and focus and confidence. You will learn a hundred words in Japanese. And you will have fun.
