Wow! Amazing hiking trail. As previous reviewers mention come prepared. For me it was less the difficulty of the terrain and more the 4000ft increase in elevation. I am pretty fit for a 40 year old but my legs were jello. That being said getting up to the crest was magical.
Some tips:
-The difficult terrain starts about halfway when you get to the rock fall area. Wear hiking boots to help with rolling your ankles. Pay attention to where you step.
-The time displayed to complete this hike by google maps is off by about 2 hours. Does not seem to be updated with all the current trail switchbacks.
-Pay attention to the trail, had to double back a couple of times to find the correct trail.
-Try to be there for sunset.
-Trail and parking close at 8:00pm
La Luz is a perfect mix of working out and having a great time! It’s not so steep that you’re struggling for breath, but I definitely broke a sweat. We will definitely be back!
My favorite hike 100%. Getting to the top feels truly incredible. Also, there is a large rock pictured below that looks like a coochi. Highly recommend!
Please read all the reviews before embarking on this hike. Not for the faint hearted but absolutely amazing. We hike plenty and don’t own hiking sticks but on this hike I sure wished we did. There were some places when I sat on my butt and just slid down because I thought that was the safest way to get down. I loved this hike and would do it again but please be careful and be prepared.
By far one of the most amazing places
I’ve ever been to. The landscape changes from desert to forest in only a few miles. I did the entire 14 mile round trip hike and it was well worth it. From low lying cactus, lizards and yucca all the way to beautiful wild flowers and towering pine trees. This trail has it all. Make sure to bring plenty of water and hiking shoes with ankle support. This trail isn’t for the casual walker. It’s challenging , but soooo worth it.
