  The decor of Red Peony Chinese Cuisine was classy, elegant and you would feel like you are in Shanghai. Their service was welcoming and friendly. The staff was attentive to introduce dishes in details.
  
  Food was authentic and delicious with huge portion and reasonably priced. We had crab meat with pork steamed soup bun as a starter and it was decent. For entrees, we ordered braised pork shoulder, fish filet in hot chili oil and griddled shredded cabbage. Our favorite was the braised pork shoulder, tender with well flavored.
  
  We also recommend their dessert - Mango Sago with Pamelo which was not too sweet, creamy and full with various fruits. It was a perfect ending for a Saturday dinner.
  
  Overall, we are willing to visit again to try different dishes and so happy there is a new and great Chinese restaurant taking over Joe’s Shanghai in Midtown.

  4.5 stars. Red Peony is a two-story tall, upscale Chinese restaurant in midtown that recently opened a few months ago. Downstairs is the main dining area with a small bar, upstairs are more seating and a private room that can seat up to 50 people. The restaurant is quite swanky, with red plush dining chairs, brocade wall paper and murals on the wall. They offer dim sum, Sichuan, Cantonese and Shanghainese dishes. Here’s what we ordered:
  
  Pork steamed soup buns: this was quite good. Juicy, flavorful broth and thin outer casing.
  
  Crab meat & spinach dumpling: another stellar dish. You can really taste the crab and shrimp in the dumplings. And the spinach made it seem very healthy!
  
  Crispy purple yam with sesame cake: this was absolutely delicious! I’m used to eating a similar dim sum dish with red bean as the center but this one is so much better. The purple yam was not as sweet but went well with the crispy outer dough and the sesame seeds gave it nice flavor.
  
  House special braised pearl duck with bok choy (half): the duck was tender and not overcooked. I would have liked for the skin to have been crispy but since it was braised it wasn’t possible.
  
  Braised whole fish with spicy bean sauce: loved the sauce that came with this dish. Not too overpowering and tasted great with rice.
  
  Double cooked pork: slightly spicy, meat was very tender and sliced thin.
  
  I must note that the service here was quite exemplary. Our waiter, whose name I did not get, was very attentive and explained each dish to us. He also, deboned both the braised duck and the whole fish at our table. I observed the other wait staff and saw that they all made a point of interacting often with the other diners. When my napkin fell to the floor without me noticing, one of the waiters came and gave me a new one. The manager, Michelle, came by to all the tables to say hello. She recommended getting the crispy purple yam dish and the braised fish dish both of which I loved. And then at the end of the meal, allowed me to walk around upstairs to take pictures of the private room because I was curious. Overall, we had a fantastic dinner here and will definitely be back.

  Quickly becoming a favorite. Second time here in three days. Really enjoyed the chicken soup dumplings and Peking duck. The portions are large and over ordered both times so wasn't able to finish. For context on price and portion, there were six in our party and we couldn't finish all the food for a bill less than $150.
