I wanted to start something to build my confidence and ability to defend myself if ever needed. Micheal at Checkmat Charlotte has exceeded my expectations. Not only is he encouraging but also empowering to women so much so I’ve started my 7 year old daughter. She looks up to him as a powerful role model! Checkmat has become apart of our family and we have been welcomed with open arms into the Checkmat family! Thank you Michael Allen!

(December 19, 2018, 7:40 pm)Michael Allen, known to the students as Professor, is the most even keel coach I've ever known. My little brother, age 14, is currently enrolled. I was looking for a place where Jeremiah could just get some exercise and interaction with kids outside of school. What he is receiving is much more. In this "we are family" environment he is learning respect for others, confidence, humility and best of all he has gain a positive male role model. Professor Allen has a nurturing no-nonsense character that everyone around him responds to especially the kids. Discipline is another key ingredient that the Professor teaches and what he expects. It's amazing to see how in the short amount of time (5 mos)that Jeremiah has been going the changes he's made. He revealed to me that jui jitsu has helped him to let go of the anger from losing both our brother and father. Words can't express my gratitude to Michael Allen and how he cares for all outside of the mat as well. Thanks Michael.

(December 19, 2018, 7:25 am)Great school ! You'll get great training and solid fundamentals. Just a great bunch of guys (and gals) just there to get better. No egos. I started BJJ late in life , so I've been to those places where they get off on beating up new guys. Checkmat is absolutely not that. Professor Allen has a easy / relaxed way of teaching and showing the techniques with plenty of opportunity to roll and practice. Highly recommend.

(December 18, 2018, 3:50 pm)Mr.Allen is definitely the most knowledgeable individual that I have worked with when it comes to Jujitsu/grappling. I learn something new everytime I work with him. Whether its a new position or something to improve my technique. I would recommend any individual serious about grappling to work with Mr.Allen.

(May 21, 2018, 8:20 pm)Amazing place. Professor Michael Allen always says "we are Checkmat, we are one" and he means it. Really makes you feel part of a team and part of something bigger. Great, humble people, and a great environment for beginners (like me). I'm glad I found it.
