This township park is perhaps one of the greatest open public spaces in eastern Pennsylvania. The former residence of the first mayor of the newly-consolidated city of Bethlehem, Archibald Johnston, the park encompasses the grounds of his "big house", as it was known by the family.
Notable here is the paved walk along the Monocacy Creek from the cement bridge to a private rail crossing less than a mile away.
The walkways are generally clear, often accessible by wheelchair (though visitors bringing others using wheelchairs are advised to make a preview visit to assess trail conditions).
In fall, apple trees planted by Johnston still bear fruit and the orchard is an occasionally-visited picnic spot.
A new parking lot (completed in 2015) is about 1/4 mile from the mansion.
Allow about 90-120 minutes for a full park walk.
Bring water and a cellphone. Portapotty is available at the parking lot.
Open dawn to dusk.
